If there were one thing to define the sound of Newborn, that's the Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mahogany guitar.
In case you were wondering, Gibson makes the greatest guitars on the face of this planet (don't quote me on that!). Now, some of you might say: "But what about Fender!?" To that, I'll respond: "Fender makes the greatest guitars on the face of this planet, bar Gibson's."
I got this guitar right before I started the recording sessions for the album. I was convinced that I needed a creamy, bluesy, round sounding guitar tones, which is what Gibson Les Paul's are famous for.
All the sounds you can hear in this audio snippet are the Les Paul, bass included. The main riff, which is basically some chord strumming, was recorded in an interesting way. In addition to capturing the guitar's electric signal (which is what one would typically expect to do with an electric guitar) and feeding it through an amp simulation, I also close-miked it, the result being a guitar tone that sounds both distorted and acoustic.
With the bass line, since a regular 6-string electric guitar is not capable of producing such low pitches, I sampled individual guitar sounds and later transposed them down an octave. I was quite pleasantly surprised that the final result sounded like a real bass guitar.
Having said all this, the guitar sounds in this clip are from Newborn's chorus sections.
